“Cyber Security” is the term being used a lot these days. Every activity that we do on the internet leaves a digital footprint. From our activities on social media to what we read, watch and hear online, all of this is present and only a click away.
With this, there are many risks people face, especially those who are active online. You become more prone to attacks such as identity theft, threats, data breaches, hacking and privacy.
Internet is becoming the medium of communication. Today more than ever, information is being exchanged online. When you purchase products on the internet, you are giving away your credit card information. When you are sharing photos and statuses, you sharing about who you are as an individual. When you use Google Maps, you are sharing your location. With all of this information online, any person with the right skill set can attack you in any way imaginable.

When hackers are trying to get you to download malware, they often turn to phishing. In order to gain your attention, it involves pretending to someone. It often happens that they pretend to be someone you know and trust. This allows them to get you to click on attachments that are harmful.

Let’s take an example. When you make a transaction, your computer is connected to a remote server. In this type of attack, the third party is able to insert itself between you and the server. The attacker is able to hijack the session and all your private information available to the hacker.
- Denial of Service (DOS)
This attack occurs when a website is flooded with people trying to access it. Multiple requests are made to the website increasing the traffic so much that the website cannot handle. It results in the website crashing down.
Since, cyber-attacks have become increasing common, what is it that a common man do to avoid such things?
Here is a list of some precautions we can take to avoid cyber-attacks:
- Invest in a good Anti-Virus software goes a long way
- Link you email accounts to your mobile phones. In case if there is an attacker trying to enter your email account, you will be notified on your phone so that you can take the necessary action.
- Beware of spam mails that might find way into your inbox. Do not download email attachments especially if you don’t know who the sender is.
- It is recommended that you change your password regularly. Increase the strength of your password by adding numbers, symbols and both lower case and upper case letters.
- Buy genuine software from retailers that are known. Fraudulent software can lead to malware which can lead to cyber-attacks.
